Presentation Title Vietnam National Museum of History During Crisis Periods - Challenges and Opportunities
Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the whole world underwent many changes, including the operation of museums. The Vietnam National Museum of History also faced common challenges: The museum closed, and visitors could not come to the museum; therefore, museum staff had to think about how to make the community still involved with the museum and not distract them from the museum, in which harnessing technologies was one of the most important factors during that time. It provided opportunities for museum staff to learn and apply digital technology in introducing museum collections and education programs.

With this theme, I will present the difficulties of the Vietnam National Museum of History during that crisis period and how we overcame them. From the difficulties, museum staff had to learn by themselves different ways to help the museum survive. Since then, we could do and operate the work that we had never done before. That could help effectively for museum activities even nowadays, so we call it: “Turn the difficulties into opportunities.”

Now, we are not in a crisis time. However, we do not stop learning to improve our abilities/knowledge to do a better job; therefore, international conferences or forums like the ASEAN Museum Forum 2024 would be a great chance for me to learn from colleagues from different ASEAN countries.

Biography

Nguyen Thi Dinh holds a Bachelor’s degree from the National University of Viet Nam in Ha Noi (2002) and a Master’s Degree in Culturology from the Cultural University in Ha Noi (2014). She has been working in the museum field since 2002. She used to work as a curator of exhibitions and education right after she graduated from university. Now, she is Deputy Head of the Education and Public Department of the Vietnam National Museum of History. Therefore, building and organizing education programs, activities, and events for the public, especially how to engage the public with museums, are our main tasks.
