Presentation Title Sustainable Conservation and Displays during the Pandemic: An exhibition of painted photographs in Tropical Climates
Abstract

The pandemic has been a disaster like no other.  The uncertainty, despair, and deaths it caused on a worldwide scale continue, while ongoing studies investigate its impact on practitioners, audiences, and the cultural institutions in which they interact. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the growing literature on the processes and the experiences of the heritage sector to recover from its effects, and how models of adaption, work, and collaboration during the pandemic continue to evolve. The case study cited here focuses on an exhibition that grew in importance, not only because of the artworks that would be shown but also as a healing process as documentation initiatives in preventive conservation showed us how we can do things better.

Collectors probably considered foto-óleos in the Philippines less stable and ephemeral, like many paper-based art in tropical climates, in comparison to oil paintings on panels and canvases. Most of those traced for this project were owned privately, preserved in perpetuity as a family heirloom or memento mori of beloved ancestors.  Few were found in public art collections such as in museums. This may relate to museums’ consideration of physical or expected ‘losses for painted photographs as they were not as preserved as their more established paintings. This paper will document wholistically developing initiatives to preserve heritage given the limitations of funds, supplies, and human resources to mark creativity and sustainability.
