Presentation Title The Climate Crisis and Environmental Sustainability Practices in Museums: A Presentation of Case Studies
Abstract

Growing concerns about the impacts of climate change have brought museums into the spotlight. Recent protests by climate activists within museum spaces have highlighted the urgency of addressing environmental sustainability within the sector. People are beginning to hold these institutions accountable for their actions and policies that do not support sustainability efforts. Environmental sustainability is a critical aspect of museums and cultural institutions, particularly amidst rapid urbanisation which has increased the effects of climate change. In this instance, public institutions serve as benchmarks in their response to be allies in addressing the climate crisis. Museums have the potential to serve as role models in implementing strategies that, in turn, inspire change within communities and on an individual level. The presentation will feature various case studies such as the ArtScience Museum, Singapore, the STPI Creative Workshop and Gallery, Singapore, the Victoria & Albert Museum, England, and Moderna Museet, Sweden. These examples provide practical and applicable precedents for other institutions, both within and beyond the cultural sectors, demonstrating how museums can be advocates for a greener future.
